2013 Legislative Forum + Luncheon Recap

AIA Nebraska, along with industry partners Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Nebraska Building Chapter and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Nebraska, hosted their 5th Annual Legislative Forum | Luncheon on January 24. Of the 49 senators in Nebraska’s unicameral legislature, 25 attended the Legislative Luncheon. Speakers at the Forum included Governor Dave Heineman; Revenue Committee Chair Senator Galen Hadley; Transportation and Telecommunications Chair Annette Dubas and newly elected Senator Sue Crawford of District 45.

Much of the conversation related to the Governor’s tax plan of eliminating individual income taxes and corporate income taxes. The lost revenue would be replaced by eliminating specific sales tax exemptions. Sales tax on services, including architectural services, is not included in the Governor’s plan. There is always the possibility of this being brought forward during the hearing process or on the floor of the Legislature. AIA Nebraska will be carefully be monitoring the discussion. The Governor is seeking feedback and discussion is expected to continue for at least 2 years.
